Oh Mannnnnnn,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I've got so much grit ,,,I'd make a chicken gizzard jealous,,,,,,,,,,,
But,,,,,,,
I did not want to see True Grit the remake, waited a while,,,but have to admit I liked it. I thought the young girl deserved an Oscar & Hollywood shafted her because of her age.
Tonight,,,because of you,,,I feel a little inadequate ,,,so I'm going to watch the original (yes, I have it on DVD),,, then I will wake up tomorrow , more of a man

Oh,,,,,,,,and just to set the record straight,,,,I've never gotten a "participation" medal or trophy
But,,,,,,,
I did get a 3rd place trophy, when there were only 3 of us in the bracket,,,

Come on, man it's the Cohen brothers, how can you not want to see it!
Even 'Intolerable Cruelty', or 'The Ladykillers' are very entertaining in the right mood.
You're a bit too old to have gotten participation awards. I am too old too, and I've tried my best to wean my students off that kind of thinking and expectations - they get what they've earned and the good ones love me, the mediocre and bad ones which are the majority hate me for it. But since many of them have med-school aspirations I am more than happy to do the selection instead of letting it be done by acres of graveyard.

I only risked the Cohen Brothers in True Grit 2, because of their success in No Country For Old Men,,,, loved it.
as far as real grit goes,,,,
isn't there a machine or something that could crush a piece of a natural, like a Zulu or PHIG & give us an accurate rating,,,,because how can a factory rate, say a Naniwa?

Probably because Naniwa's and Nortons have their exact grits screened and mixed with proper amounts of suspension media in a controlled environment in the modern manufacturing process.
Easy to assign a grit rating for that. Even if you could crush and test a natural, how much would you crush it before screening? Adding a ceramic media is out for naturals, but how would one know how and how much?
There is no such thing as two identical naturals, in general. No such formula, other than by the hand/shave to say! I do love some natural hones, though!

No if you crush it you change the structure,
The size of the cutting particles are only part of the story, how they sit, what they sit in, and how they release, if they release all has a part in the movie "True Grit"
Even using a Diamond plate to release slurry changes things..
This is all true for Synthetic hones also, but they are screened for for uniform grit size... and a uniform Matrix to hold them and release them..
Just forget Naturals for a second and look at Synthetics.. take every 1k or every 8k and try and compare them, even having all the same grit "Size" they all perform different now toss in the unknowns of Mother Nature and the variables multiply exponentially..
Grit schmitt how does it feel on the steel, and how does it feel on the face...
Perfect example:
Shapton 1k
Shapton Pro 1k
Naniwa SS 1k
Naniwa Chosera 1k
King 1k
These all are 1k but they are very different, even the scratch patterns and depths are different... This is why I hate seeing numbers on naturals not even grit rated synthetics cut the same
And after all that add in what Dave I think was eluding to also, what about after the grit starts to break down, if it breaks down, does it hinder or help..Last edited by gssixgun; 06-16-2014 at 04:30 AM.

Thanked: 522Mea Culpa dudes, it seems that I may have phrased my original question/thought in a manner that somewhat is misleading as to my original intent, thereby causing most posters to waste quite a bit of ink discussing the grit to natural comparison. That is an issue that we can all agree upon, towit: natural stones cannot accurately be rated by grit because of the inherent difference of their random origin and or composition.
We all understand this fact and we all know that eachother understands this fact and we all understand that I, too, am aware of this fact. It seems that this fact has been needlessly belabored in the above posts simply because I originally posed my question incorrectly.
Allow me at this time to pose my question in a more accurate fashion. The question is: Has anyone who owns a Zulu Grey finish stone found any other stone, synthetic or natural, that compares to the performance of your Zulu? Simple as that.....
Here we go again!!!JERRY
OOOPS! Pass the styptic please.
