Thanked: 169Mystery natural hone. Lots of pics
Came in a box that was late 1800s given the style of some of the nails and pins in there to keep it intact. Box had to go through as it was caked in oil and what appeared to be ancient pine tar. It had me heaving, even after I blasted it with some really strong stuff to tame it. Stone is 5x2x1". I'm out of sandpaper so lapping has to wait for now. Has a band going across the top. Prominent saw marks on one side.

Thanked: 169IDK, just got it today. I dug up a piece of 180 and it flattened out quicker than any natural I have encountered in my life. Like synth waterstone at 220 style fast. Blackish gray slurry raining off the thing. Additional lighter banding revealed.

Thanked: 169It was in a box that was definitely late 1800s and going by mutual patina, was in there the entire time.

Thanked: 169It doesn't feel coarse. It's quite silky, even at the current level of finish. I'm pretty sure I could pull more out of it in that department.

I really looks like the kind of stones glued or attached to the back of yellow Coticules. They also give a quick and dark slurry.

Thanked: 169No, it's definitely not BBW. I have enough of that stuff to know that much. The slurry is all wrong. I lapped the side wo the banding and it feels extremely fine. It also seemed a touch harder than the banded side.
