Moughton Whetstone.
I'm going back up to North Yorkshire next week to see my family. I may have the opportunity to take a trip over to the moors and grab some of this rock.
Has anyone played with it and can give me an approximate grit and feel for it. I'm not wanting to go hunting for a 5K grit rating stone.
It certainly looks pretty enough, And the site seem like a reasonable location to walk to.

Thanked: 480If its anything like the Dalmore stones, it can rate from 4-6k, It would be sweet if they turn out to be higher. And I agree, I would want one at any rate, simply because its beautiful! Bring me back a hunk!

It might interest you to know that in ancient honing lore that stone was very highly regarded. Read this post ........ then go through the whole thread ...... and you'll see what I mean.

Looks like I'm heading out to Moughton scar.
It'll probably be Tuesday or Wednesday when I go over. I'll see if my Mum wants to go for the drive out, We can see my godparents in Middleham/Leyburn. Then head over to have a walk in the correct location. It's only about 15-20 miles further into the moors. It might be nice to have a stone from my birthplace.
Thanks for the link Henk, How did your rocks turn out from the site. Have you used them since.Last edited by Iceni; 06-18-2014 at 07:13 AM.

Thanked: 3164I have had twenty or more of these hones, They are mostly equivalent to around 6k, some a bit lower some a bit higher. Not fast cutters and the scratch pattern is a bit coarse - for instance a lower grit BBW leaves a more polished bevel than a moughton.
Depending on how the stone is cut, the lines are either straight (ish) or very curvilinear:
They do tend to have cleavage lines in one direction, so inspect the edges. A small hairline cleavage crack is fine, though.
Regards,
Neil

They are handsome stones, I'd probably just look for the most elaborate pattern, set it next to my near perfect barber's hone which I never use and use the Chosera for razor work.

I've never regarded hones as being "pretty" but that stone certainly is eye catching. Some remind me of damascus blades. One beside the other would be a great photo.
