Chosera "Professional"
Saw this @ SRD. As I'm going to buy a Chosera 1k anyway, I'm wondering how this compares to the original that everybody loves. Seems like it doesn't come w/ a base. Any differences in use or care for this? Read about Choseras cracking if dried too quickly. Your thoughts, gentlemen?

it's just a name change from naniwa.
Naniwa Professional Stone (New Chosera)
Q. Is this the new version of the Naniwa Chosera stone?
A. Yes, Naniwa changed the name from Chosera to Professional stone. It has always been their professional stone, now its name reflects its intended use. The same method of production that has made this stone famous has merely been updated to allow for tighter standards in grit tolerances.
The stone is still the same binder, and will still have the same care requirements.Last edited by Iceni; 09-02-2014 at 01:22 AM.

I've had a 1k since the early reports of a few guys experiencing the cracks. Since then I've added the 3, 5, and 10k and never had any issues. Some guys 'splash and go', I soak mine for 5 or 10 minutes and then hone. When the job is done I rinse them and leave them in the dish drainer for a few before storing them in the cabinet. So far so good.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Looks like this one is thinner (20 instead of 25mm). Hopefully the service life is still the same. Wonder if anyone here has used the new ones yet.

Interesting. Both are magnesia bonded stones, the new ones are thinner, 20 vs 25mm, and they are cheaper using the above link vs CKTG for the old ones. One of the biggest complaints about the 1k Chosera as a bevel setter was it's cost, so maybe they just made it thinner and reduced the price? Most companies are pretty sensitive to perceptions of cost.
If I look at the ratios of the thickness I find that 20/25 = 0.8, while the ratio of the prices is 81/95 = 0.85, so the real cost is not much different really.
I have heard some info about the grit being more uniform in the new stones, but that would seem an incremental improvement though it should reduce the "rogue" grit scratches.
Cheers, Steve

i have all choseras.. 1,3,5,k and at one point a 600 grit. The only one i had any problems with was the 600. All the others are great.. just let them dry naturally. and you shouldnt have any problems.. The only difference with the new choseras are that there thinner and more expensive.. Chef knives to go forgot the gemtlemans name that runs the show but is very informative in regards to choseras and is a gentleman. The 5k is a thirsty hone but once u use it alot it slows down.. For the higher grits and price range i would look at the suehiros 10k 15k 20k there just awesome stones .. or for cheaper the naninwa 12k is a great finish stone imo. The suehiro 20k is supposed to be the jnat finish for a synthetic .. imo its become a lil to harsh for me thats only because as u progress in honing u realize what stones produce what feel and how to get there.

Biting the bullet. I'll post how it works when I get it. Also finally joining the Dark Side & getting Shapton GS 4,8,16 as my Norton is officially kaput. Need that 1k for all those barbershop razors.
