I have a 12k(?) Droescher and use it every time I hone. It is a great stone.

    I lap mine on a 325 DMT.

    Default Droescher stone

Well I haven't got it lapped yet but I did mess around with the stone with an old razor. I really like the stone. I was thinking that maybe I would sell it but after messing around with it I don't know if I can.

If you decide to sell it, there might be a line. Count me first

When you guys are done using your stones do you let the slurry dry on the stone so it can be reused?

i would say it is up to you. I usually wash off the slurry after I am done and make sure that the hone is ready for the next session.

I would draw a pencil grid on it and lap whichever side you're going to use. It will probably be a slightly lighter color on that side once lapped. I wouldn't glue the label back on if it is off. If you do waterproofing it is a good idea. I use some stuff called Krylon Preserve-It, a document protector. Seems to work alright.

I usually wash the stone off while giving it a rub with a nylon fingernail brush before I put it away. I don't always use slurry, if I do I still rinse the stone when I'm done. No hard and fast rules, just whatever your preference is.

So draw a grid pattern and lap it with something like 350 grit w/d paper. When the grid is completely gone stop. After I'm done with that is there any thing else I need to do? Sand with a higher grit or anything?

Thanks for all your help on this. I was completely in the dark before last night.

That is correct, a simple grid lap will work. With wet dry there is sometimes an issue with slurry building up and wiping your pencil lines off, so if there is a lot of slurry built up, do it twice. I would not bother to lap higher than 325, but I'm sure you will get opinions all over the place on that.. I know some guys always lap to 1200. As far as selling goes it is unlikely you will find another at a great price.

Okay I just picked up a marble tile. And some high quality 320 grit sandpaper. When I get home from work tonight I'll give lapping a shot.
