If you chose the Norton, you will have to lap about an 1/8" off the 4k side before it starts to become smooth and useable. Hope this helps
Thanks! I think that is where I will start. For lapping I plan to use sandpaper and a piece of granite or a tile depending on what I can find. I appreciate the input

If there is a recycling center or a Habitat for Humanity Re-sale store near you they usually have a wide assortment of marble tiles. Got one at my local center, 12 x 12 for $1.

I would recommend using a figure 8 while lapping. But sometimes I admit my 8's turn into 6's or 9's.

I was planning to spend up to $100. For now I just need to refresh my current razor that Lynn previously sharpened but hope to acquire more razors in the future. Thank you all for the consideration and have a Merry Christmas!
Given your username, are you located in or near Ames? If so, I might be able to help you with trying out a few hones. Let me know either here or by PM.

This is the first I have seen of your post. The hone may have belonged to a barber but it does not appear to be a barber hone. That is, I don't think it is synthetic and the dimensions do not appear right. The photos were not very clear but from what I can see, I wonder if it is a BBW from the bottom half of a coticule. The one cut corner is also reminiscent of a coticule. When you lapped it was the grit purple?

Yea the grit was purple and I am sure it's a BBW. I posted the question of what it is in a thread called passed down hone. And just about everyone thought it was a BBW. And it was confirmed when I payed a visit to Steve56 home. When I showed it to him, he handed me a larger identical looking version telling me it was indeed a BBW. Sad to say though there is no coticule side or at least any more. It would be nice if there was.

To answer the original question. I always seems to have one less than I need. I'll buy a new hone and be happy with it. And boom a week or two later I'll realise that I absolutely need a new stone.

Again not photos but 2 DMT plates Naniwa 1-3-5-8-12K then the Suehiro 20K. 2 Swaty hones and 2 no name razor hones and 1 King 1/6 hone. I sure am glad i'm not like you guys with the HAD affliction. This razors and hones and strops could get all out of hand.
