dragons tongue ?'s
I am thinking this will be my first hone because of the price and it comes pre lapped and ive herd good things about it. My question about it is its a natural slate stone. And it comes with a slurry stone that suposably makes it cut like an 8000 andthe stone itself is 10000. can i make a thick slurry like on the coticule one stone honing video and cut fast and thin the slurry with water untill its just stone and water to lets say bring an thriftstore find back to life. or do i need to purchace different grades of j nats to use on this stone to go from bevel to 10000 . thanks i use lapping film and have been thinking about starting to use a hone but im on a tight budget.....

Thanked: 580I would get a Norton 4000/8000 if your budget allows.

wait,no to the dragons tongue or no to the one stone method all together. I know this may sound odd to you guys, but i dont want to have more than one stone and I want something finer than a barbers hone. probly 10000 grit im thinking should be enough

No, it does not sound odd to us,,, we are used to hearing all kinds of stuff,,,,I find your opening post to be so confusing that I say, "buy whatever you want",,,, if the hones don't work out for you later on down the road, then please list them in the classified section for a good price.

Thanked: 4828I believe what the no is in reference to is buying a natural slate as your first out of the gate hone. Most of us, on the advice of those who have gone before us started with a synthetic. Because they are predictable. Ever natural is different to some extent, unless we are talking about labeled and tested hones, then they are somewhat predictable but still different. If you are looking for a cheap way to learn and maintain the Norton is the path most recommended.

Thanked: 13249No the Dragon's tongue isn't one
No the Slate one isn't a finisher
No the Grit numbers are "Koolaid" but I told ya that already
No a real Dragon's Tongue is even lower down the scale
No the Slate or "WHIG" version of the DT is not a finisher either
The Green or the Purple Slates aka WHIG's are at least finishers
No I do not believe the one stone system works well without a 1K bevel setter to get the edge inline
No I would not recommend a One stone system for "Thrift" store or E-bay razors you need a 1k
Buying an inexpensive stone that will not do what you need it to is a waste of money
Next question - Could I make it work ???
Yes, I could make it work as seen on the original thread about 1 stone honing, I could probably even use a Synth Nagura and set a bevel with it, but it is easier to buy a King 1k for $24 and do it right
There is what I think, but it is after all your money, and your time, so I can only give suggestions as to how not to waste either..
ps: Yes I own all 4 stones in question and have used all 4
A Dragon's Tongue from Indigo Jones
A Grey WHIG aka Slate DT
A Greenish WHIG aka Welsh Thuringen
A Purpleish WHIG
If you insist on buying one get the Green or the Purple at least they are finishers
