What do you guys do with hones....
Gentlemen my mind has been wondering again this time it is what do you guys who have a preferred or soon to be preferred hone do with the rest of them? Sell them, store them or give them to others to use?
I have a beautiful La Dressante coticule from Ardennes on the way which I am determined to master. I want to use it exclusively until I can achieve no finer an edge. I however own a 1k which I want to keep due to bevel set but I also have a 3/8k and a combo coti which I do not like. I'm having mixed emotions on what to do with them.

Howdy...... I hear ya on what you are saying about hones. I have several that I use. My main ones are 325 DMT plate (mainly to flatten the hones out)...... 1k Naniwa, vintage Belgian Coticule, and a vintage thuringian (Escher)hone. I do have others as well. Another smallish vintage coticule, a very fine "unknown" fine grit black hone, and an Apache Strata hone. The first set are the ones I usually use. I do use the others at times. It's fun to play around with them or sometimes some hones just won't do the job and you'll try something else to see if maybe they will do the job.
If I were you..... I'd keep your collection until at such time you get more hones. Some people have 100s of them..... Most sit on a shelf or in storage (guessing here). I'm sure some sell or give some of their hones to others to use too......
Collecting hones can also be an addiction.....lol
Always learn the hones you have is also a good rule of thumb. Coticules are fun to use..... Learn it, master it and you have a hone that will be your "work horse" for many decades to come.

Thanked: 246I keep all of them unless it's a stone that has no redeeming qualities, lol. I can forgive slow if it gives a great shave. I can forgive harsh if it's really fast. If it's both (harsh edge and very slow) and ugly to boot, I may sell it on. Same goes if it's a duplicate stone and I also have one that I like better.

Thanked: 4826Well, there are some here that are avid collectors with shelves and shelves stacked full with the synthetics and hone from Europe and Japan. There are those too who are rock hounds and have stacks of hones some lapped some not. Some piled in the shed, others in an old lateral file cabinet and old wooden boxes stashed here and there, and shelve with labeled Eschers and vintage Belgian Coticule and zFrench hone and UK slate stacked on shelves and drawer with carefully laid out barbers hones. Pretty much I just hang onto them. I have thoughts of selling them periodically. Then I go back to work and forget how many I have.

What should we do with hones ?
My guess is honing ;-)
this question comes up several times during a year....
So what i do is:
Hone on them
Switch them to use in different progression
Sharpen Kitchen knives
Exchange Hones for testing
This is all fun, so thats my answer to:
Are really so much hones needed ?███▓▒░░.RAZORLOVESTONES.░░▒▓███

Thanked: 66Well you can give them to me I wouldn't mind that for sure
For I will sell whatever I don't use after playing with until my heart is content.... and I will try to keep the most beautiful ones if they aren't duplicated hower almost every natural stone is exceptional, even Eschers

Why not just post them in the classified section? I am sure that a new user/honer would love to have them at a discounted price. I looked several times before I had to order new. All stones that I have seen in the classified section, since I have been a member of this forum, were $300 and way out of my price range.

I could do that I just don't like dealing with Canada Post for shipping items. Always such a hassle (for me anyways).
