Thanked: 1DMT-E
Following the advice in "A Simple Honing Method" a DMT-E appeared at my door.
Frugally I bought the 2x6" model instead of the larger one.
WOW-E, this does wonders on blades I had given up for shaving.
I have long used a Norton 1000 followed by 4/8 and then a 12 oilstone.
Too much time wasted on honing a rounded bevel from that one.
Not to knock it but this 1200 really sets it well for the next stages.
And I thought I knew something about it!! Now I'm so much better!!!
This piece of metal is the best 1st step.

Thanked: 4826A lot of guys use them for restoration work but for a bevel set I am still hitting the 1K.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

If the edge is gone from a restoration then a course hone would be great but for a normal bevel set i'm with Rezdog . for me it's the 1K naniwa.

Thanked: 1184Do you own a loupe ? If not, get 1, it will help you see what's going on. The DMT will get down and take off some metal but I think what the others have found is that it also leaves some deep scratches which translate into jagged edge. Sharp but not smooth. Not as bad as it sounds really but if you go to your 1k after the DMT it will reduce the imperfections before you go on to the rest of your progression.
If you already do this, just ignore me :<0) You didn't say .Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 52It's the Naniwa P310(1K) for me to, if I need a bit more speed I slurry a Norton 1K this will speed things up without the deep scratches from a diamond plate.
I have used a DNT600 for taking out a big chip though.
