An Escher is a labeled Thüringian and a Thüringian is a type of slate hone from Thüringen, right? Or have I gone senile already?

I don't want to say anything negative, but no. It really depends on so many variables.

I still wonder how a really good yellow/green Escher (or whatever Thüringian) edge would compare to a really good coticule edge in a (preferably double) blind test. And by compare I mean whether or not they feel distinctly different from one another (and how so), which I strongly doubt. So far I haven't been able to distinguish between them blindly or even knowingly. But it is all so bloody relative and subjective, isn't it?

Very very subjective. Am sure I'll still get a thuringian at some point, I'm having too much fun honing and learning. But no rush now as I'm getting not just shaveable edges as I was, but comfortable shaving edges.

Having said no rush about twenty minutes ago. Have just won a 5×1 thuringian for peanuts. Says that it has been used with oil. Will a good lapping remove the oil? Or will I need to keep using oil or a honing solution?

Thanks again for all helpful and informative comments.
