Surmike , you might want to stick with synthetics till you learn how to gone, start with a finisher and learn to maintain, you may not even need to go any lower than that if you do a good job, I've got razors that haven't seen a stone less than 8 k for quite a while and then I send them out if it needs more But start with something that will give you consistent results instead of trying to figure out a natural to begin with. Just my opinion. Tc

Thanked: 5Yeah, I know! I have heard this from numerous folks and I am fine with that. I do have just a stone for touchups as I picked up a F.Swaty to use for that but just thinking ahead for the whole setup!
I have the Norton 1k, Norton 4k/8k so I was in the hunt for a finisher to use after that and sometime/someday I will get a natural to replace the 4k/8k is the plan!
Thx.

I brought some coticules from the superior shave recently and a 6x 2 was I think about 90 dollars. Don't rush it there are plenty of stones just get what speaks to you they will all give a good edge.
Just had a look and must have gotten 40 x 150. Got a la Grise and a la Verte. Both give good edges but have preferred the la Grise so far. Were $83 worldwide . Hth good luckLast edited by eddy79; 07-26-2015 at 01:18 PM.

Hardness is one of those things that do not really matter with regards to the functionality of a coticule, apart from the ease/difficulty of getting the initial slurry going. In my experience this matters even less than than the specific coticule (which influences honing speed more than end result).
If the intention is to just maintain razors, I do not see how you could go wrong with a coticule. Mostly you will just need water on top of the hone, maybe the tiniest bit of slurry. If the need or desire arises to do more structural honing you do not need to go out and buy more hones, and can just start experimenting with the unicot method (like notitfortat): (1)bevel set (2)make sure your bevel is set (3)add layer of electrical tape, replace half the slurry on the hone with water, do ~30 X-strokes (4)do ~50 X-strokes on water. It might not be 100% idiot proof, but damn close.Last edited by Pithor; 07-30-2015 at 09:08 AM. Reason: I rite Inglish veri gut.
