Using a 220 Norton lapping stone on a 12K Naniwa?
I have a Norton 4/8K that came with a 220 lapping stone. I have a 1K and a 12K Naniwa Superstone. Is it OK to lap the 12K with the Norton 220 lapping stone? It seems to me that this may leave some fairly large scratches in the 12K perhaps defeating it's purpose as a finishing stone.
Thanks
Adam

You should lap it with a higher grit in my opinion, 220 will leave very deep scratches
You could use the 220 if you add further finer grits afterwards (600, 800 to max. 1200)███▓▒░░.RAZORLOVESTONES.░░▒▓███

For initial flattening, sure.
But I'd use some finer grit before putting razors to that 12K.
Say some 600 grit wet/dry paper...Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanked: 11I would use your lapping stone for the flattening and then smooth it with your 1k.

Thanked: 56I'm pretty sure Lynn's lapping video shows him lapping the 12k with a DMT 325, with no mention of using anything finer. Is there that much of a difference between 220 and 325?

Thanked: 3215I have been using a King,1k to refresh my finer stones lately and it works just fine. I use it on my 12k Super Stone, it quickly removes the swarf without removing as much material as a diamond plate.
Same for the SG20.
Use the 220 to get flat, finish on the 1k.

Thanked: 3795If you do choose to use the Norton lapping hone, please be aware that it is not flat when it is new.
Yup, you need to lap your lapper. Now, if you do proceed to lap your lapper and then lap with your lapped lapper, you need to be aware that lapping with your lapped lapper will cause it to no longer be flat so that means that each lapping with your lapped lapper will cause you to need to re-lap your lapped lapper.
So I usually use a diamond plate!

Or.. You could not be as critical about 100% flatness....
Who am I kidding I use a dia-flat hand certified to get 0.0005" flatness.
DMT for the win.
OP,
I never had trouble using a high grit stone after lapping only on the XX. That being said its only in my limited experience. others will tell you different. You can see that already in this thread.
YMMV - if you don't know, now you know .....Last edited by s0litarys0ldier; 09-29-2015 at 06:41 PM.

I lap everything with my DMT 220. And yeah, it has left scratches in my stones. I have thought about going the 1K route for all of my stones just because of that. I will have to give it a shot!
