    Default Super/special naniwa difference?

At the moment have naniwa pro up to 3000 then bbw and coticule. (Still struggling with size of small thuringian). Am getting decent edges but often have to jump back down to 3000 if I mess up a stroke or two. Was thinking of an 8000 grit naniwa so I'd only be finishing on the coti. In Germany for the winter and German amazon has the 2cm thick superstone with holder for the same price as 1cm thick specialty with no holder. Was wondering if there was an appreciable difference between the two?

Buy the thickest stone with the backer. The 1cm stones are thin and I would be afraid of breaking it. I am very careful with my stones and still they get banged around occasionally. A glued on base does protect the stone.

The 8k is a work horse of the progression especially if you are using it as a pre finish stone. Get the edge as perfect as possible before going to a natural finisher.

The stone performance should be the same.

Cheers. Was leaning that way, but wasn't sure if they'd stepped up the quality on the new ones. Only of experience of the low grit pro (new chosera) stones. And had read that the supers were actually better at the high grits.

I have the 1cm SuperStones mounted on bases. It is my understanding that there was little if any change that went with the name changes. I doubt that you will use up even a 1cm thick Naniwa hone other than the 1k, which is a pretty soft bevel setter and I have used up one of them. It is highly unlikely that you would go through 1cm of an 8k in your lifetime of honing. That said, if you can get the 2cm with base for the same price as the 1cm without base, then I too would recommend you get the 2cm 8k even if it is the older version. IF there is any difference in the quality of the two versions, I doubt that you or I would be able to notice it.

I have an old, pink 12k super stone and have tried a few of the new white ones and they perform the same.

I also have an older 8k super stone on a base, but have not tried the new 8ks. If they were not as good, we would have heard about it by now.

I don't know the name differences but the standalone Snow White 8k was better than the 8K Naniwa SS for me. I think the Snow White is the only one in that line and uses a different binder than the SS

I did see that snow white, but assumed it wasn't suitable for razors as I'd never heard it mentioned on here. In what way did you find it better?

It was a fast cutter that left a great polish for it's grit. Nice feel on the stone and I used it a lot as a touch up stone followed by CroX. I was not fond of the SS in this grit range. Below is a link to an image of the stone

Might have to go for the Snow White. Sounds a good stone. Cheers

The binding agent has been improved according to their website.
I had the superstone 10k, dropped it and broke it so brought the speciality, cant tell the difference.
