Of course they can flatten, once they've been trued. And periodically checked and retrued - just like any other tool that's subject to wear. If you don't agree, then don't buy one.

I've used the Norton flattening stone to true up my hones. As shipped they do perform their function. You just need to keep in mind the surface IS rough, so you'll need to sand scratches out, at least until it's broken in. No different than having to run a screw driver or chisel over a diamond hone to knock down the high sitting diamonds.

Unfortunately, since it's made of the same stuff every other Norton hone is, they will dish and wear. But, what do you expect for a $30 flattener?

I have a dmt coarse so I'm not in the market for other flattening stones. The dmt seems to be scary effective!

In that case you should stay away from the DMT Dia-Flat. It's the 120 grit 4x10 beast that DMT actually made for the intended purpose of lapping. It's a lot of fun if you like to lap stuff quickly!

I don't want/need it since I've already got the bigger beast but I went to the DMT site and did not find it searching under Dia Flat. Oh well, the bigger one is better for lapping anyway and I've already got it.

Its about 50% more expensive than a regular diaflat. Does it last 50% longer??

The way I see it is this: the regular dmts works and are known to be good. and unless youre a pro they will last a long time.

I don't know. You are correct, the D8X 220 mesh or D8C 325 mesh work quite well and are much less. I use the 325 mesh.

No, that is not correct. The one that Modine linked is cheaper, not more expensive; but it also is smaller.

The standard $190 10"x4" Dia-Flat uses 120 micron (120 mesh) diamonds and the Dia-Flat 95 comes in two versions, both of which are a more fine 95 micron (160 mesh). One version is also 10"x4" and costs the same as the standard Dia-Flat. The other version is 10"x3" with the same size of diamonds and costs $135.

You can see a comparison table HERE.
