Thanked: 351I think some of us MAY have the wrong end of the stick. This is NOT the old Shapton cast iron lapping plate used with lapping powder, though it looks very similar.
This is a new Diamond impregnated lapping plate, designed to be used in the same manner as the DGLP, only it appears to have a backside that can be used for lapping chisels and plane blades. It is not to be used with Shapton stones coarser than 500 grit and must not be used with other manufacturers stones coarser than 1K. They say that for coarser stones to use their lapping powder on a cast iron lapping plate, but I don't see the older plate available on the site noted above, though there is a round cast iron lapping plate available. If you don't read the instructions carefully, it might seem that they suggest you use the lapping powder with this new plate, but they actually don't, and it would quickly ruin this plate, if you did!
I see that the information plate on the end indicates that it is made for their "Professional" line of hones, rather than the glass hones which have the matching DLGP. Naturally, it makes no never mind which diamond plate you use with which stone... But I suspect Shapton would like you to buy one of each if you have stones from each series.
I would not pay the price they are asking for that plate.... I'm quite happy with my DMT and Atoma plates... and I see zero reason to spend more. It was however fun to look at.

No big deal Jimmy, I suspected it was a new item which is why I posted it. It is an expensive lapping plate & I buy things from there when SRD doesn't have it & sometimes Chef Knives to Go. I was looking at the Chosera I don't have which is the most expensive one (10k) & when I go on there, I look around at other things. I do like the straight edge they have for checking your hones to make sure they are in fact flat. I have all the Chosera's from 1k on up except for the 10k. I've had my 1k for bevel setting for about a year now & I recently purchased the Chosera 2k, 3k & 5k. I like the deal they have going if you buy 3 or more, you get 10% off & I didn't buy the 10k because I have a Snow White which many say gives excellent results similar to 10k-12k. When I purchased my first Naniwa's, I got the super stones but I really love the cutting results of the Chosera's.

Thanked: 351I found a link to a dealer that carries most of Shapton's lapping supplies... the pattern in the cast iron and diamond plates are the same, thus making it easy to grasp for the "wrong end" of the stick! I almost made the same mistake myself, it was the diamond reference on one of the ends of the DRLP that made me look twice.
