    Default Shapton's New Lapping plate

I was looking on sharpening supplies.com & Sharpton has a new Shapton Diamond Reference Lapping Plate. It has two sides to it. One side is used to flatten 500 grit to 30,000 grit Shapton Sharpening Stones. The other side is used to assist in the process of flattening blades.

Rather than say more about it, you can see more of it here:

Maybe it has changed somehow, but the DRLP has been around for at least several years.

Maybe so. Maybe I'm behind the times but this is the first I have seen of these one on there.

Here I thought Tom was branching out into lapping plates.

Neat! For 500 samolians, it should hone your razor as well!

They were around 9 years ago, and you have to use powdered grit (forget what it is called) with them. Supposedly guaranteed, but Shapton told me, IIRC, was that if you drop it and warp it game over, and what the guarantee is, is that they will sell you a reconditioned plate at a lower price. You have to have the diamond reference plate to qualify to buy the reconditioned plate. A trade in IIRC, like a car battery.

Anyway ........ anything I have to use grit with I'm not messing with. Might be good, but an Atoma diamond plate is a lot less hassle. Also, I think those are designed for plane blades and chisels. That is the purpose of the side for blades.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

They are called Shapton Lapping Powders, which come in Coarse, Medium, and Fine grits.

I'd have to agree. I would prefer the simple lapping method & not hassle with any powders.
I never saw one & I don't know why as many times I've been on that site unless they just started selling them.

    Put it this way...

Even though the DRLP is the ultimate Shapton lapping plate, the DGLP is more than awesome enough!!!
