I always wanted to try a coticule but I'm too cheap to pop for one, being something unknown. ..

Choose wisely....I got one, it's called Norton 4/8 . I may not get polished to 40k, and there may be a ton of them out there but.,,,,,,, I could set a bevel with it and then refine the edge to get a real nice shave :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

How true, if you can't get a shave ready edge off the 8k, going any further is just a waste of stone and time (hey, what a great name for a novel!?!). Went down that road many times till I learned that and still make that mistake more frequently than I'd like....

    Hi there,

To me "holy grail stone" means it is something precious and extraordinary for which you have to go on a quest to acquire it .

In my case I there are three holy grails, one from Germany, one from Japan and one from Belgium:

    1) A comfortably sized labelled Escher
    2) A Nakayama Maruka
    3) A large unblemished Coticule

Well, after many years of searching, my quest is over :

    9 x 2" Escher in original box:

    Nakayama Maruka (13.5 x 8 x 2.5 cm):

    10 x 2.5" vintage coticule/BBW:

    Cheers
    Jörg

i'd really love to have the king size version of this nakayama kiita. it's an incredibly smooth finisher and a pure joy to use.

10pups the Norton 4/8k is a work horse stone. I can get a really good shave from the 8k and a pasted stropping.
jollo74 those are magnificent specimens you have there. Nice! Phrank that is a gem. Thanks for sharing.
