I've used a dmt e only to sharpen knives and the dmt c for razors. I know I am lazy. But after you mention the C not leaving as deep a scratch as others works in favor of the theory. See according to my mental experiments, all I do with the dmt C is cut to planes that meet, then I refine with the coti. So if the scratches aren't deep and the coti cuts shallow marks as well... well it all seems to fall into place. I do use tape on the spine when doing this for those wondering.

Now logically,,, If there was a faster way to hone razors that gave acceptable edges don't you think those of us that do it professionally would be all over it

You would probably think we might have tried almost every idea people purpose, that there might be a darn good reason why we don't go that route
Could you give us some feedback as to why you don't use this method?

Speaking for me, I don't use a DMT 325 unless I have to remove lots of metal to fix a chip or frown. They usually will give a ragged edge that have to be fixed with a gentler hone later on

How many razors have you done this way. What's your exact route you usually take? Stroke count when to move on. How much coti work?

I never count the strokes, I just go at it until I can pop hairs with the dmt, usually about 2 3 min work. Then I remove the tape, slurry the coti and hone until it dries up, get the razor wet and using the liquid from the razor I work the slurry again to make it wet again. Keep going until it is almost all gone (the slurry) or it is to black from metal. Then I wipe the coti and go to work with little slurry, wipe again and then no slurry. Usually takes me about 10 or 15 min. The first shave is never the smoothest, but it is a darn good shave. After about 10 honing sessions on just cotis, or jnats it all gets back to norm and get awesome shaves. I've done about 20 razors this way, never had a problem with someone saying its shite.

    You just did

I can't make it any more clear then you just stated right there..

I don't go back to the hones when the razor is done, what you are doing it cutting the belly out of the blade and creating a ragged edge as you refine the edge those stria announce themselves harshly every single time

I rarely EVER go below a 1k,,, only for true Edge restoration never for honing and Diamond plates are terrible for creating deep stria

And it is not just the stria you see.

Micro chipping, edge failure is common from Diamond plate bevel setting.

Your edge does not improve, until you remove all the steel, weakened by the aggressive diamond plate.

Yes, it is quick, but you are making the case for not using Diamond Plates for bevel setting.

    15 min honing X 10 ≠ fast

To be honest this thread blew up so I'm just soaking up a lot of the information and ides. My neighbor has a shapten professional progression that I'm pretty experienced with, but but it's not as fast as what I would like. I didn't even know you could bevel set on 3000 Grit so right now this thread is rewriting everything I know about sharpening stone progressions. I like the coticule idea but I have no experience with one.
