Thread: Thuringian – Blue Belgian Whetstone combination Hone

I got quite a lot of thin thuringian whetstone plates, so I thought of how to create a reasonable combination hone with a good backing to supplement the Thuringian endfinisher.
When I met Maurice at Ardennes last month, we spoke about that and what we can use for the backside. I was hoping to get some Lorraine for the backing but at the moment there is no Lorraine to be mined at the Ol’Preu quarry. Maurice is exploring the Regné quarry right now, but it will take some time before he can start regular mining there. Focus will then be – beside the known Coticule veins (and some new ones like the Myrtilles he has already introduced) also the Lorraine stones.

However, for our first Belgian/German joint project we decide to glue the Thuri to a BBW.
Here is how it looks like:



The result is a nearly 10 x 2 ‘’ - light green Thuringian hone on BBW.

I wonder if it would be possible to use a coticule as a backing stone. That might be more versatile or at least faster hone.

That's a special stone glue from the company Würth.

That would be my preference. The BBW being stout enough to reinforce a coticule, which is apparently soft/brittle, I wonder if the Thuringan is stout enough ? I'd bet that it is, considering that it does fine as a stand alone stone.

That's a beautiful stone.

A BBW works well too! Very consistent, if slowwwwww. I like that BBWs are harder than cotis even though coticules give me killer edges.

Thats realy usefull combo Very good progretion with 1k stone
1 K followed by BBW with slurry and thuringian at the end for finishing .
