PRC razors, wide 1/4" hollow bevels and a Shapton glass 1k
Hello gentleman! In the last year and a half I have invested heavily in PRC razors which I now have around 9 and all but one is 8/8. I then purchased stones (Shapton glass 1k, 4k, 8k, 16k the holder and diamond glass lapping plate) after the fact, I have been honing for a year or so.
I have honed other razors edges successfully but when it comes to my PRC razors it takes much more time, the Shapton glass 1k clogs up and I have to re lap it to get some fresh grit to abrade the edge to bevel set.
From those of you who have honed Portland razor co razors or other full bodied 1/4" razors would you advise I purchase a chosera 1k or another type of bevel setter??? I can spend 30 mins to an hour getting one of their razors to cut arm hair at bevel set......Thank you all....
I have not re set the bevel on all of them...just one newer version 6/8" I have been working on...Last edited by dshaves; 10-19-2016 at 02:45 PM.

Thanked: 12I don't own any PRC razors but I do make razors using O1 and find that they can be a bear to hone when establishing their first bevel. I am not sure if that is do to small variances in hardness or what. PRC from what I know tempers their steel to 62. I am not sure if they have a hardness tester to verify this on the razors or not but at that hardness it shouldn't be a huge problem for honing. They do use one layer of Super 88 tape. For razors that arrive completely shave ready it really should take that much on a 1K to touch up bevel. They use norton, naniwaa, and DMT hones but really any should work. Being that you have honed other razors successfully before is the hardness of the steel that might be different from what you have honed. I might try to contact them and see if they have any suggestions of thoughts.

Yeah all 9 of my factory sharp razors from them isn't sharp enough lol. For me they tug, and I have bought them at different times even sent a couple back to be re honed. They are really awesome guys too!
I have one razor that I foolishly decided to re set the bevel. I use their 1 layer of super 88 tape too. Just setting that bevel takes a long time. If there is no faster way I can accept that I just want to make sure

The glass Shapton 1K is really not their best stone from their lineup. The 4, 8, 16 and 30K are top notch. Get a Chosera 1K. That's what I did years ago and haven't regretted it one bit.

Now keep in mind that the higher the hardness the longer it's going to take and set that bevel. I personally find those 62/63 HRC unnecessary for straight razors but to each his own.
