So maybe i should go to 4k or 8k before nagura? I had planned on 8k before i started reading info but i didnt want to go backwards. Is 8k too far?

I've read about people doing this. On my stones, 8k to botan is backwards, but then again these stones give different edges. Best is to try.. like I said in that other thread, try shaving, or like Mike said, try some kind of a hair test. Remember you are in high grits and going back and forth here doesn't hurt your razor very much. You could always tape the spine, just in case.

For me, mid-range to botan works great! Call that 4k if you will, I don't know, because the only synthetics I own are a Nani 600 and 1K

I don't have Japanese stones, but I play a lot with slurry on the ones I do have. Same basic theory I imagine. Key is to be sure you've eliminated all the scratches from the 1K before thinning your slurry, or moving on to one that's more fine. After that it gets a little fuzzy because I've noticed slurries don't seem to leave scratches, just a hazy finish. So it's a matter of figuring out when it's as polished as this or that level of slurry will get it before moving forward.

As to what level you'd start from, I would say it depends on how much of a challenge you're up for. If you're feeling froggy start at the 1K and have at it. Worst you can do is find out you didn't get all the 1K scratches removed the first round and have to start over again with the nagura. Which is just an excuse to play with your new stones more.

Thanks for the reply guys. I think I'll start with 4k just to get a bit of a head start on it. Dont think I'll get the chance tonight as I've been taking care of honey-do's. Its non stop it feels like. I get off work and try to plan to do some stuff and she wins with her jobs first. Tell me again why I got married? Oh yeah, Sex. ha. And love but I'm too manly to admit that here. Hell, we all put the sharpest things in the world to our throats daily. We got to be some of the manliest men on the planet!

    You're funny my friend.
At Christmas my sister in laws boyfriend was talking about a pokeman game he bought. I was sitting there thinking " I cook with wood and shave with a straight razor, you seriously need to grow a set"

Well, My first attempt with Nagura's did turn out well. Got the bevel set. At least I thought so. it looked good to me and felt good with the TNT. Then went to 4K till the scratches were much less. Not as deep or wide. Then started the Nagura progression. Finished with slurry from my finishing stone. Stropped 100 on leather after 50 on Suede to be sure it was dry. Shave test failed.

I'll go back to the Bevel Set tomorrow and start over. I spent about 2.5 hours on this. Trying to learn to flip the blade right so I'm pretty slow. I know I can do this. I'll watch some more vids and go again in the morning. Wish me luck! I Can Do This!!! Proper attitude helps in all things in life!

TNT does not work for me, has to be TPT. I know when my edge has the bevel set as soon as I set the edge ever so lightly on my thumb pad, sticks immediately with no pause or jumping down before it catches. No HHT is needed. I do however check the rest of the bevel for an invisible edge under the flashlight. Then and only then, if I get no edge reflections can I begin playing with my nagura's.

Maybe your edge needs just a little more, so not the 1K? Attempt at your own risk, but this is what I would do. Kill the edge very lightly on the side of your finisher. Check under the light, you should see an even reflection across the entire edge. Go to 4K to set it shaving again, keep checking after every 7-8 strokes, until the reflection is gone (keeping the number of strokes relatively low, because I dont know how fast you 4K is). After this, two rounds of Botan, and one round of each Tenjyou and Mejiro, finish on tomo, as you did before. So the key is getting a good bevel indeed, but the rest is still all about learning your stone, which I feel you dont need any help with, just practice. I hope it works out for you, go slow and good luck!

I'll give this a try the next time I get a chance. In the mean time I need to order a Tomo Nagura, It didn't come with my set and I've done a lot of reading and it seems to be the last stone to use. Guess that's why they don't include it in the set. Get you hooked and make you buy another. Ha. Thanks for the reply and info.

Although, I've also read that Tomo is just a same stone as your finisher. So if I use a fine diamond plate to make slurry with, isn't that the same as a Tomo? BTW, My finisher is a Shoubundi.
