Thanked: 2Yoshihiro Toishi Stones
Has anyone heard of or used these? This shop is close to my house and the guy I spoke to said that their stones are superior to Naniwa and Norton stones. Would be interested to hear from someone that's used them.

Thanked: 3795I fear the odds of you getting much help with them is low. What other grits do they offer?

Thanked: 2They have a 1000, 3000, 8000, and 10,000. What do you mean by "getting much help with them"? Do you think the stones won't perform well?

I assume what Utopian means is that you're not too likely to find members here that have experience with these stones. They appear to be rather pricey for synthetics.

Thanked: 3795Yup. I'm sorry I was not clear. I have not seen those hones before or at least don't recall any mention of them before. For that reason, I am concerned that you will not get much, if any, advice about that line of hones. Because I am completely ignorant of them, I see no reason to speculate on their performance.
Personally, I would not trust the vendor's assessment unless he also sells Naniwas and Nortons.

Thanked: 168I believe those stones are manifactured by Imanishi , and are the same as those 10 K stones Metalmaster sells as private brand
Only rebranded and upgraded with stand and cleaning nagura .
If this is the case they are very good for knifes and chisels , not so good for razors .

Thanked: 2Interesting RusenBG! Why wouldn't they be as good for razors? Thanks for the info!

Knives and tools require sharpness only, so it's fairly easy to find hones that work well for them. Razors are a completely different matter, a point often not understood by new razor honers. With razors, smoothness of edge is as (or more) important than absolute sharpness. A hone that works perfectly fine for knives may leave an agonizingly rough edge on a razor. A good example of the converse is the Belgian coticule, which often leaves a slightly less keen edge but gives a buttery smooth shave. This is due to the shape of the garnets in the stone, which are low and rounded, leaving a smooth edge. A synthetic hone that is designed to cut steel quickly, may have abrasive particles that are highly angular that leave the edge looking more like a microscopic saw blade - it cuts very well, but you'll know about it when you use it on your face! Hope this helps.

Thanked: 2591Because they were made to work for knives and not razors.
In Japan there are a few OEM stone makers, that can make anyone willing to place a large enough order any kind of stone, to specification.
Imanishi, Suehiro, Naniwa are the main makers, I have been told that there are also other outfits that offer the same service.Stefan

Thanked: 59lol! Like the 2k, 8k and 10k Wei Wei stones I bought hoping they were for razors because of thier high grit ratings and cheap price. Oh yea! they cut like mad mama's but the edges are rounded off and the 2k looks the same as a 10k under the scope. No, not good for razors. I have no experience with the above mentioned Yoshihiro stones though. I just know about the wei wei's....lol! Oh, and they will not even put a bevel on a razor...
