Still I've now seen even the super stones can crack.
My theory is that if you give it a quick refresh woth a dmt plate before honing on it, any crack is simple below the surface of the abrasive plane of the stone. Shouldn't affect the blade's edge, especially if they're longitudinal or at any angle really.

    I have 3 Nanis. Green 1K, Light blue 1K, 12K superstone.

I won't soak any of them.
I tried soaking the 12k and thought it was all-over as it literally twisted on me.
Let it dry out and sorted it, it is fine.
Water them good a while before honing and resurfacing. That brown Naniwa brown turd rock is great as well as a well-worn DMT 325!
    Let them dry after use.

The 4/8 Norton lives in the water!

My 1k and 5 k super stones both have the crazing, almost 4 years on them and their still fine, I don't feel any cracks or spots that catch, I bought a pro1k so the as 1doesnt get any work other than kitchen knives, but the 5k does and no ill effects. Tc

+ 1. Truth be told if I had just stuck with the Nortons and not bought anything but a 12k superstone I'd be way ahead of the game. Hindsight being 20-20.

I have or have gone through 16 SuperStones. None of them ever have shown any sign of crazing or cracking.

I've hardly touched my Nortons since getting the Super Stones.

Seems what I have done, Jimmy. Cannot get away from the 4/8 Norton?

My 1k is perfect but my 5 & 10 are cracked.
It didn't effect the honing but seeing the 10k cracking was distressing.

I've packed them away and just stick to naguras now...

yes. it started with crazing, that became worse and worse. the stones bent and finally had wide cracks, perpendicular to the honing surface but also to the sides, which rendered the stones completely useless.

my 5k pros were pretty thirsty. as i don't like to hone on a just damp surface i had to add quite a lot of water. maybe it was too much, but these are water stones, aren't they! another mistake i may have made is to use one side only most of the time. this side probably expanded more when wet than the other, dryer side, which caused some stress inside the stone.

as i have mentioned earlier, i am happy with the 5k super stone and the 400 and 1k pros. i usually jump from the 5k SS to natural stones, so i have never used a synthetic stone finer than 5k.

needless to say that i can't recommend the naniwa professional 5k. to me these stones are too fragile and not the workhorses synthetic stones should be.

    regards,
    hans

Have the Chosera 1k, naniwa ss 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12 and soak the lot often for 15 minutes or so still they stabilize just like Glen does in his YouTube vids. Once done dry off and pop on the table till dry and pack away. Never seen any sgn of twists cracking or crazing.

They do seem to react with water and swell? Might be something in the splash and go just swelling the surface while the rest stays rigid and dry?
