Thanked: 9How Many Types of Novaculie Hones Are There?
Arkansas stones are the only ones I have any experience with. Just wondering if there are any other types of hone that are novaculite.
I imagine Turkey stones might be. Are Charnley Forest stones slate or novaculite. Any others you can think of? I imagine that type of quartz is found else where. Thanks.....

It's a common rock. Found worldwide.
The reason The Arkansas slab is of repute is because it doesn't normally appear as a massive slab.
Charnley, Turkey, Llyn idwal are definitely novaculites/chert. As too are some good stones from Europe.
Novaculite as a term is almost a marketing term. It is used almost exclusively for the Arkansas formation since no one else sells a graded chert. As a rock formation cherts and low grade metamorphic sedimentary rocks are found pretty much everywhere with varied geography.
Good Jnats are also cherts. Just not from silty deposits, rather from Radiolaria deposits called Radiolarite.

Like anything in nature variation is the key. That's why you take a lump of coal and add heat and pressure and you get a diamond. The specialized forms of any rock or mineral get increasingly scarce as the quality increases.
