    GotGrit.com has Silicone Carbide down to 60 grit and sells as little as a ¼ pound.

    You can buy 60-500 for under $15. A steel cookie sheet and 60 grit will get you flat.

    Just make sure you use it in like half teaspoon bursts dispersed. More isn't more, you end up with your edges more out if you do that with sic but so long as you have good habits using it, you can switch to fixed grit once the heavy lifting is done to get rid of that sic shot peen effect polish without drama.

    With loose grit it helps to have a solid close to flat surface to lap on.
    Some common options can sometimes be inexpensive.
    * A drop from a kitchen counter shop (cut out from the sink drops on the deck).
    * An odd bit of steel 1/8" or more from a machine shop.
    * 12x12" granite tiles for a bathroom.
