Mystery hone
Recent auction win. There was no description and only one crappy pic. Didn't really care about the Washitas, it was the paddle that piqued my interest. It was a sealed bid auction and I initially got an email saying I was outbid but a few days later I got another saying I indeed did win. Woohoo!
Well it showed up today and was dished like a son of a #!×%$.
Lap, lap, lap, lap, lap, lap. And then a bit more lapping and here we are.

I've never seen a hone that looks like this. It's not super hard but not really soft either. About like a coti I suppose. Feels very smooth and almost glassy. Any ideas?

Thanked: 3215There are some brown coticules, supposed to be harder and fine finishers, there is one for sale on French ebay, now, for over 200.
Though the slurry looks like Kita slurry.
What does it finish like on steel?
It will most probably pop out of the holder, if you lighly tap down on the edge of the wood holder. A couple light taps and it should break loose. You will hear the difference in the sound when it breaks loose. One of two more and it will come free.
The bottom and sides may give you more information.
Nice find. You are on a hot streak…

Thanks. I'll be out of town for the next few days but when I get back I'll definitely start experimenting with it. Hopefully you're right and it pops out easily. That would be great. And I can't deny that I'm on a hot streak lol. I actually found another stone just a few days ago at an antique shop that I believe is a Turkish oilstone. I'll make a post once I do some honing on it. Sure hope this streak keeps going.

From the cracks in the paddle, the wood has probably shrunk. Will probably take some effort.
I have a small, brown coti that is darker than that stone, but not as streaky and the slurry is not that deeply colored.
Neat find!
