Velvet Edge Barber hone test
Here is the Velvet Edge Best Quality barber hone. No other instructions came with this hone. Small surface pock marks are present and do not create a problem when honing your razor. This brown single sided barber hone measures 5”L X 2”W X ½”+-H.
Two identical King Midas Extra Good razors were chosen to test this Barber hone. Both razors were taken to a 1K-4K-Norton 8K level. One of the razors was then progressed to the approx. 15K level on a much finer stone. The edges were visually inspected at 100X magnification at each interval.
8 X-laps, strokes or passes were made with each razor on the Velvet Edge to see if it would improve or degrade the razor taken to the Norton 8K edge and the razor honed to the approx. 15K edge.
Conclusion, the Velvet Edge barber hone improved the edge off an 8K Norton. The approx. 15K edge was degraded. The small pock marks had no adverse effect on the performance of the hone. Stropping on leather or properly pasted strop would smooth the edge even more.

Thanked: 14Thanks for the test!
Strangely, I just picked up one of these based on a couple of other positive comments about it on the site -- although the writing says

Made in USA"
Looking forward to checking out how it does

Don't want to derail your great threads testing these barbers hones,
But question, if you were to have just one BH to use for the rest of your life, which one would it be in your vast knowledge, would you settle on? I'm looking forward to your answer. Tc“ I,m getting the impression that everyone thinks I have TIME to fix their bikes”

Thanked: 480Is this going to be an ongoing test of the various different brands? I know Glenn has tested a bunch, But I dont think he posted them on SRP. I am super curious as to the differences between the Pike Emerald, and the Pike Sapphire barber hones.

Thanked: 480Between my not feeling well physically, and my distaste for certain members and their attitudes, I have found myself not online so much. If anybody missed me THAT much, they could have emailed me. =P
Shouldnt all the BH be under a group heading? Like "Modine Tests It" with a new installment each week ?Last edited by Magpie; 11-15-2017 at 05:33 AM.

Sorry you are feeling down, Magpie.
I agree. Perhaps it should be under one thread. Would be easier to access and follow.
