THIS JUST IN
Tried the routine Nick suggested. Just a wonderful shave. Couple of hick ups, but that's on me using a different razor for the first time. The edge was delightful!!!
Next up Gary's circles and maybe start the search for regular cut Coti vs the bout.
Be safe friends and cheers,

On bouts VS rectangular hones: I have had three bouts, all more or less rectangular. It pays to ask.

Ive had best part of a dozen coti pass through my hands (maybe more than a dozen), and I have only kept 1 and tend not to use it even though its good as I like my SG20K and my Charnley Forest hones,
I started off on Naturals and slowly more and more synthetics have found there way in to my go to honing set up to the point that its an all synthetic hone now for me, I will never sell all my naturals, that said the Jnats went to fund the SG20k and SG10K and Im happy I did that, each to there own, (I love Synthetics they work great no grey areas on the set up I have, but I like the feel of naturals more)
Ive tried enough finishing hones now to know what I like and I feel I am 100% certain I dont need another (unless its the Naniwa 12k, just to go between the 10k and 20k not needed I know but..........)

I hear good things about the SG20k, but am very fond of the Coticule smoothness,
how does the SG20k compare to the smoothness of a Coticule?
If it is similar I will buy a SG20k for sure, consistently a much easier stone to use I imagine

Interesting question, My experience with a coti edge is that it is very forgiving I can pretty much go bananas all over my face with the razor not feel like its going to scratch or cut within reason. I get a sort of relaxed attitude and may not be too concerned with pressure using the blade against my face. on the other hand the SG-20 edge I feel is reasonably smooth at least smoother than other synth finishers out there. Certainly way better than a lapping film edge regarding smoothness but there is potential to produce a very keen edge with the 20k and that much keen isn't going to forgive a nonchalant shaver if he presses too hard or makes some wild turns on his face. A coti edge user may have to rethink his technique a little and just use that "shave the lather" mindset for the 20k. I don't find shaving with the 20 k irritating at all and its a damn efficient shave you could get away with one pass and a few touch up strokes and it would be good. 2 or more passes and its ultra BBS. I like shaving with both edges. I enjoy both stones for variety.
Don't drink and shave!

I have used a SG20k edge on one razor, honed by a competent honer. For what it's worth, I didn't notice too much of a difference between that and a decent/good coticule edge, perhaps slightly less forgiving.
However, edge retention was quite abysmal, in my opinion, because I wasn't even ten shaves in when a touch up was required (i.e. loads of tiny nicks all over).
As it is a high grit finisher, it probably matters a whole lot more what preceeded it. Similar to pure finishing (on water only) on a coticule.
With the prices they demand, I have problems understanding why they are as popular as they are, but each to his own (and their money).
Best regards,
Pieter
