Default Problem with Shapton Pro 12k?

    Hello,
I got a new Shapton Ha-no-kuromaku 12k und an new Shapton Ha-no-kuromaku 8k. After testing these stones I am not sure whether the 8k ist finer than the 5k Shapton Pro. The biggest problem seems to be the 12k. When I look to the edge with an USB microscope or a magnifying glass I can see big scratches. Also the razor seems to be less sharp after the 12k than after the 8k. Am I doing something wrong or is it passible that the stone has larger particles in it?

I've sent a PM to a friend of mine who is in Germany, hopefully he'll have time to get back to you for some help.

You didn't mention any of the troubleshooting/investigating you did, nor what your technique is... so I'll ask what probably are silly questions:
1- Did you lap your 12k hone recently?
2- Did you chamfer the edges?
3- Are you using a slurry or directly on water?

    Sorry for that.
1- Yes, I lapped it before first use and I lapped it another time after I noticed the scratches
2- Yes, I did after lapping
3- using directly on water. Even tried under running water.

The stone has a pretty harsh sound while sharpening a razor on it. I think I try another stone. I'm not a big fan of the Naniwas. Maybe I get a natural stone for use after the Shapton 8k.

In the first pic...the bevel looks not bad
In the second pic....the bevel seems to have developed a tiny wire edge
In the third...less wire on the edge but still there a bit
Could be that you're knocking off the wire edge on the 12k might have caused those scratches?
I have experienced that before....did you feel anything on the 12k that felt like something was scratchy? (big gritty feeling) maybe that wire was breaking off?
Sometimes we overdo the honing a bit ....i'm guilty of that sometimes lol
Don't have shaptons but naniwas and a couple of times i've felt the wire edge break off at the 12 k...but you feel it!!!
Jointing on the side has helped alot~
Have you honed alot of straights or just starting?

The kuros are very aggressive, fast cutting stones that need a very light touch as they scratch quite deeply.
If the razor is less sharp @12k you have probably done too many stokes on the 12 or the bevel is not properly set.
I used them for years for their speed when doing lots of restorations but almost always finished on Jnats to "heal/polish" the edges.

I have a 1K Pro I lapped with my Norton lapping hone. What Onimaru55 said is very true about that line of Shapton being very aggressive & only needing light pressure. I am looking to get a 10 or 12K Pro in the near future. I finish hone on a 16K Shapton Glass with good results.
