    Default Lapping Shapton Glass 30K

Can a Atoma 1200 use as a lapping plate for the 30K stone? I read some where that Atoma 1200 is not good for lapping, what other plate can I use for lapping the 30K beside the Shapton's brand lapping plate?
    Thank you.

The DGLP is actually a 325 grit
So the 1200 as long as you have already knocked off the high diamonds will be fine

Keep in mind the no lapping warning is there so you don't think you can lap a few Akries and not wear down the Diamonds
Lapping soft (in comparison) synthetics should do no harm

ps never lap hones that are near or lower grit than the plate

    Water water more water

    Glen,

I more than once lapped a JNAT with a 400 Atoma plate and could not figure out where the scratches came from then it came to me after getting them out with a tomo and the next time I lapped it I noticed scratches so now I use a pretty worn down 1200 Atoma when needed and then burnish the stone with a tomo to smooth it out, as for the rest I use the 1200 and on the 1K I use the 400, both plates are pretty worn and I have not seen any ill affects so what can happen using a lower grit plate on a hone as long as it’s worn down and not new.

    The other way around

If you lap a 1000 grit Hone with a 1200 grit plate you can tear the diamonds out of the plate

same as you don't lap anything less than 800 or so on the 325 plate

Alright, I was on the phone while ago and seem like some of you guys might misunderstood me a little bit, I'm new to straight razor and looking forward get into it.
The question about the shapton's lapping plate is because I didn't know it's that coarse otherwise I wouldn't bother asking about it since I do own the Atoma 140 and 400, no need to explain to me why I shouldn't use a high grit lapping plate to lap a lower grit whetstone.

My question is what should I use for lapping shapton glass 30k stone, please keep it simple.

Can I just Lap the Atoma 1200 on a Shapton Kuo 320 to break in the Atoma a little bit?

No don't use the 1200 to lap the 320 just sharpen a kitchen knife and knock of the high Diamonds, it will be fine on your Shapton 30k once you have done that...

Your 400 would be ok too

Ps: I am also assuming you have already done the heavy lifting by getting the 30k grid flat with your lower grit plates and now just need to smooth the surface before honing a razor ..

The quickest way to break in an Atoma is about 30 seconds on a Spyderco UF...if you have one.
Break in is hardly needed. Out of my 6 Atoma only one ever had a high spot.

IMHO the 1200 is no good for flattening as it's too fine to remove much stone but for slurrying & daily cleanup on fine stones it's perfect.

How about if I use Atoma 400 to lap the Shapton Glass 30k (when need) and use the Shapton Kuro 12K to smooth it out?

If this is the case, can I use another whetstone to smooth the 30K out or it's too hard of a stone for it to take effect?
