Thread: Mystery Stone from Flea Market

Feels very fine. I paid $5, anyone have any ideas?

Cant help identify it but it is a big chunk of stone for sure.

Hard to tell. Maybe a good scrubbin with a brush n some degreaser, or Dawn dish soap.

Or maybe the dishwasher. It needs to be lapped for sure.

Yea, that is a “Dirty Stone”.

No, really too dirty to ID.

Soak in a 50% solution of Simple Green and hot water for a day or two. Or blast with oven cleaner and scrub with a stiff brush or scotch brite then soak in degreaser.

I have had good luck recently with Awsome cleaner from the 99cent store for soaking stone or degreasing metal parts.

I buy a lot of stones that look like that, most are clunkers or knife stones, but sometimes… you find gems.

Post a pic cleaned up.

Let me see what I have around the house, otherwise Bar Keepers friend will do. I have had luck dishwashing Arkansas stones. Thoughts?

I'd be hesitant for fear that moisture and heat might cause the stone to split. Simple Green or Awesome are the route I'd likely take.

Yeah, I would avoid the dishwasher and just scrub with dish soap if you don’t have any stronger cleaners. If you lap it that will be removing some of the crud near the surface anyway. That is not to say it will not need cleaning though.
Even if it is just a nice sharpening stone for knives, it would be worth hat you paid.

I think the heat could be an issue in the dishwasher. But I don't really know about these things. I'd go with what Euclid440 has to say. He is one of the Stone Gurus of this site.

No no, don't put it in the dishwasher. Simple Green is the way to go. I have cleaned a LOT of stones with a Simple Green soak, it works very well.
