Default Identification of hone in wooden box

    Greetings,

A friend came across the hone in the photo below and would like to know more about it. Can someone identify this stone?

Unfortunately this is the only photo I have of the stone

Carborundum? I mean what Norton calls "Crystalon", i.e. silicon carbide. That's what I find every time I lift the lid on a boxed hone I'm willing to be corrected here if anyone else cares to make a guess.

If you could lap the hone a little to expose a fresh surface we might be able to help.

Is that a slurry stone at one end ? Might make it a natural but not a lot to go on.

Yes needs some TLC so it can be seen. What are the dimensions?

The box is typical for hones from Great Britain. The hone itself - the edges are very sharp on all sides. Doesn't look like a natural to me.

Yea, too hard to tell from the photo, but there does appear to be slurry on the stone and box, left side and as Oz pointed out looks like a slurry stone notch. And it has very little wear, so it was probably a finisher.

That someone made a box for it, and it is a nice, well-made box, they thought highly of it, it does look like the stone fits the box, I would think it is probably a good stone.

For me if a stone is in a box and fits the box, I am interested, if the price is right. I have bought many a grimy, boxed stone like that at flea markets. If they are boxed, very few duds, though often not at all, what I thought they were, once cleaned.

Lots of good indicators, but too hard to ID from that photo.

Unfortunately the photo above was the only information I had. Thanks for all the replies and I apologize for not replying sooner.

For the record, my buddy didn't buy this stone, the price was more than what he was hoping to pay for it.
