That's some nice honing real estate, Jerry-I've been playing around on a 1"x5" little thuri Steel sold me that has given up some buttery smooth edges on the curvy Sheffields I bought it for. Hone on!

Thanked: 292Jerry
What do you see as the similarities and the differences between the hones in terms of honing capabilities?
Are any of these Eschers, or just no name Thuringians?

I just got done putting the razor to rock. The Green feels more gritty/hasher. But its popping hairs so I'm crossing my fingers on that one. The yellow/Green was very smooth to the blade. The Dark Blue I've had for a while. It's as hard as glass. Its only good for finishing on and gives a crisp edge and smooth. I will test shave the two I did on the new hones later tonight. Hoping for great edges of course, but being the first razors on them I won't be disappointed if they don't come out as perfect as I'd like.
As far as the "Box of Rocks" goes, I've been making Wood boxes for my Naturals, so they won't fit in the "Box". I had to do something as it was overflowing. LOL.
No name Thuri's, Ray. I got them from Peter in Germany. Thuri Bouts. It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 61Great photos! I love how the well this shows the contrast in the stones.
I only have one thuri myself, a 1"x5" "Celebrated Water Razor Hone" (which I've been told is an Escher subsidiary), but I've had pretty mixed feelings about it.
It came plastered into the box with a darker slightly speckled side up but I managed to get it out and noticed the colour shifted midway, so I began to lap the back to get a secondary surface. The two sides definitely perform slightly differently, but it's really difficult to describe just what that difference is. In any case, my experience with this has left me a bit befuddled as to what all the thuringian fuss is about; maybe your description of the green one as harsher is applicable here, but I had always read that even a relatively poor performing thuri was still a pretty darn nice edge. Maybe I'm simply doing something wrong with it, but I consistently find the extraordinarily smooth edges from my coticule preferable.

Results are in. The Y/G won by a whisker. LOL
At first, I thought the Green was the keener of the two and the Y/G was more comfort. But as I continued to shave switching between the two I think the Y/G was a little better of an edge. Comfort levels on both were very high (the feeling that it couldn't cut you) and still a nice keen edge. Not like a 20K but keen enough I didn't feel it was lacking. I had also tested a Jnat edge at the same time. Jnat was keener and smooth too, but not as smooth the Thrui edges.
So this will require another shave to compare the two again before I can say for sure what one was a better edge. It was that close. And with this being the first try with these stones I'm very satisfied with the results. I'm not sure if it mattered much, but having a bit more area/length on the Y/G made it more comfortable to hone on. Not having to cut my strokes down to short ones like on the Green. Not that it is small. Just shorter than the other.
Money well spent! And if Peter gets around these parts in the future I want to thank him for hooking me up with a couple of nice stones! It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 61It's a great problem to have: the [slightly less] keen and [slightly more] smooth thuri edge or the [slightly more] keen and [slightly less] smooth JNAT edge.
I want to like this stone so badly but just haven't been able to get there yet. Every couple of nights I've been touching up the edge of the same razor up in a slightly different way, sometimes with a slurry diluting down to running water, other times just a few strokes, other times lots and lots of strokes! Funny how this somehow at once makes me want to buy more thuringians while at the same time making me want to never buy another again.
