    Default 12K Stone Thoughts

Are there any good 12K stones for the $75 or so price range. I have been taking care of my razors with an 8K SueH and pasted strops and finding it perfectly fine for me. But I got the "what do you want for Xmas" question which I am never good at. So, any good stones in that price range?
If you're wondering I'm probably being sarcastic.

If your going to get a 12k get the Naniwa. If your honing for yourself it will last a lifetime.

    Thanks Mark.

I suppose a follow up question (to anyone). What am I getting by going from 8K to 12K? Does that just save time on the white and green pasted strop or does it replace the pasted strops? Or does it improve the edge even if going to the pastes after?

The 12k will bring a little more keenness, CroOx is great for smoothing out an edge.
It's an aggressive hone so too many laps will give a harsh edge.
I have the Naniwa 10k but use that for a stepping stone to a natural or Gok 20k finish, but that's a different ball game.

Agree! 12 k Naniwa, splash and go, super easy touch ups.

Thanks again. I have got some stuff to look up. I am working on fine tuning the number of laps with the pastes.

I eventually want to figure out how to transition to naturals. I accidentally got a thuringian stone that I have played with an love the feel of it. It is only like 1" wide and 4" long, so a lot of practice to get that even pressure with an almost sideways stroke. Never mind holding it flat enough to keep the water/slurry on it .

In my mind an 8k is a pre finishing stone and a Naniwa 12k is a finishing stone. Many people do not use pastes after a Naniwa 12k.

Naniwa 12K, universally acknowledged as the best finishing stone in its category, buy it you would be foolish not to.
