    Default Shapton Glass Seven Review

Shapton GlassStone Seven Knife Sharpening Kit

25 micron - about 600 grit. This grit is used to efficiently shape an edge on dull knives.
6.70 micron - about 2500 grit. This grit is used to refine an edge shaped on the 25 micron stone, or to refresh the edge on a knife that needs only a light touch up.
.44 micron - over 30,000 grit. This grit is even finer than the .49 micron/30,000 grit stone found in the HR series, and we have no other stones so fine. It is used to put the finishing touch on a razor sharp edge.
The Stones of the G7 are 160mm x 37mm, or about 6-1/4" x 1-7/16". This is a bit smaller than the 210mm x 70mm, or 8 1/4" x 2 3/4", size of the HR and HC series stones. The G7 stones fit snugly into the Stone Holder.

They are proven stones. They've been around a long while. The sevens are new I know. But their characteristics are similar enough. I did buy the 30k. Great deal. $105 or so compared to $360 or so for the 8 x 3. I use that one for knives though and not frequently.

Just recently saw these and wondered if any razor honers were using these instead of the full size stones.

I have heard on another forum that they have and they work quite well. There is still the argument that the 16k isn't made for razors. But I don't use them so I didn't pay much attention to it. Shapton does have some sort of guide for them. I'm sure it's in their website regarding using for knives or razors.

I've used them, hand-held, and they work well for me. I bought a set from Dictum in Germany, following their recommended sequence for razor honing: 6.7 > 3.0 > 2.0 > 0.85 microns. Resulting edge is fine but improved by a brief visit to a natural finisher (coticule, hard Ark, or fine slate) afterwards. Likewise, I left out a couple of the hones and went 6.7 > Lorraine > 2.0 > coticule > Welsh purple slate and had a very nice edge as well.

Nice travel set-up as they're splash-and-go, and for those like me who don't mind honing on relatively small, narrow hones. When I work up the gumption, I may glue them on some small boards a little larger than the glass base plates to raise them a little off my palm. As they are, hand-held, one definitely has to use them with the palm and fingers outstretched, remembering to keep the thumb lying low as well.

The dedicated stand as sold sort of reminds me of something out of the film set of the old silent movie, Metropolis. Thankfully, I don't need one of those.

I have the full set of G7 and they work very well on razors though I usually use the full size HR and HC stones. Sharpening Supplies says that the G7 is not the same stone as the HR, and that’s likely true.

When CKTG first listed them, I placed an order, and in my order were the 0.85u (about 17k) and the 0.44u (about 34k) stones.

It turned out that the particular 0.44u stone was defective, although a friend who ordered one at the same time had no issues. Mine released large chunks of material and would destroy a razor edge. Mark checked it out and sent it back to Shapton, and Mr Isahara (sp?) confirmed that my 0.44u was defective, but I did not need it since I had the 0.85u.

Here’s an image from the Sharpening Supplies website.

And the G7 holder is a work of art deco art. I also like how it’s labeled ‘Holder’ on both sides so that when you’re honing drunk you’ll know what it is ….

Default Stone holder ID. You know it with one open while inebriated.
