Be nice to know what it says on the label in full - and is there a picture on the box lid top? Quite a light coloured stone in this instance. The variation is fairly wide it would appear - I have now seen about ten Tams and the colour and pattern is substantial. A natural product of course. The Dalmore blues I have seen are all very similar and the water of Ayrs tend to be dark blue. I just got a Tam in a very different box too. I will post a picture soon.

It seems Ebay has pull this item off as it has ended, but this is the complete page with other picture:

"This honing stone comes from an old barbers shop many years ago. I am not sure of the period, somewhere between the 1930's and 1950's judging by the other items in with this lot. I think all these items came out of a barber shop as most of them are brand new but this item was in use at the shop. The label on the box states:- Made in Scotland, Very Fine, The Celebrated SCOTCH DUAL HONE for razors, scalpels or very fine knives. "Water of Ayr Stone", "Tam O'Shanter Stone Fine". "Sharpen with Water or a Thin Oil. An end label states:- WOA Extra Fine, 6" x 1 1/2" x 3/4" FINE. Old Nock & Kirbys price tage of 4/3d. Size is 16cm x 4.5cms x 2cms and quite heavy. It looks like the barber shop closed up and everything was boxed away until I bought them. Cut-throats, honing stones, razors, brushes, etc., mostly all new and all from the same period so keep your eyes open for more items out of this lot. Start at $0.99 + $9.90 (at cost) registered postage within Australia. Bank deposit preferred, PayPal etc. and I do combine postage costs on multiple purchases".

O man, that would have been one good purchase. So the water of ayr is finer than the TOS?

Yes, AFAIK the WOA is the finest of the Scottish stones and the most difficult to find.
