I found a business selling a "Water of Ayr type stone" which would cost me £22.15 inc vat shipped to the US. they rate the grit at 4000. Size 190 x 63 x 19mm which isn't too bad.

I'd love to see one of them, but I have always heard the Water of Ayr talked about as if it is more like a 10 to 20K...

Assigning a grit rating to natural stones is a bit of a fool's mission.

Ive seen that same business Pyment...its a gamble, given its an unknow...hope ya post more on it. Let us know if ya decide to purchase one?

If it's the one in the UK that I'm thinking of, the stone they advertise as a Water of Ayr is in fact a small and narrow Tam O' Shanter. I confirmed this with someone at the company; they described a Tam perfectly rather than a WOA.

I'd be curious about this stone .. WOA 'type' stone .. if it's a natural . Would brilliant if it was .

I thought that I would post since I wasn't able to find this anywhere else. Note the different labels. I haven't used either, so can't comment on similarities/differences.

Edit: Just in case you can't see the second label clearly - The "Fine" TOS is specified "for razors, scalpels, or very fine knives," while the smaller one is for use with "axes and hedge knives".

Hmmmm...

I wonder if there is actually a difference in these stones, or if it's just a marketing thing because of the size...
