Thanked: 156Razorburne,
The 12k is a nice stone. I really like it. But I hone a lot of razors by most people's standard. Not Glen's though.
Anyway, I can't give a full review because I've only honed 10 razors with it so far and only test shaved two. The feedback is nice, the stone is really soft. Very easy to lap. It definitely has its place in my arsenal. Initial thoughts are that it gives a good edge, whether it is a better edge is TBD. However, I have this sneaking suspicion that like the coticule, its able to make a good edge even better. Or maybe it just adds sharpness, I can't tell; more tests are needed. One last thing; the stone cuts fast. I like that part. Makes me happy.

Thanked: 13Shapton 16k in addition to my Chinese 12k
I am still working on my honing skills and setup. At the moment I have:
King 1200
DMT 8000
Chinese 12k
Green Oxide Paddle Strop
TM Red Latigo
Im not happy with the 12K. It just takes way way to long after the DMT to get to a good polish. I want ease of use and performance for around 100 bucks. The Shapton seems to be a good way to go. Id like to know if it is the way to go and if so; should I use it after the 8k or the 12k. Thanks.

JonnyO,
As other have taught me on here, you can go from the 8k straight to the 16k, or you could use it after going to the 12k first...either way will work, as from 8 to 16 you are doubling the grit size, which is definitely acceptable.
You could go with a Naniwa 12k, which is very different than the "Chinese 12k"...as Leighton and others have said, it is a fast cutter, which the Chinese stone is not, and puts a sharper and more polished edge than the Chinese stone from what I hear. (it's also less expensive than the Shapton, if $ is a concern).

As above, you definitely need a faster cutting stone than the the China. I find the DMT 8k pattern is very deep & takes quite some work to polish out.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
