The fact that the Henckels are Naniwas helps/makes my life a lot harder. Cus even though they may be ****ty Naniwas, Norton's quality control has dropped off significantly, Utopian posted some microscope pictures somewhere attesting to this.

Olivia- Consider this. I will not have the Shapton DGLP. Would you rather have Naniwas or Shapton glasses? I remember in the original thread I had you recommended Naniwas over the Nortons, but how do you feel they compare to Shapton glass?

The Shapton DGLP is NOT necessary. I lap mine with either a DMT XXC or just the DMT C. on stones 1000 grit and higher I just use the C to lap with, and it does fantastically.

Besides - no matter what you lap with, the level of flatness will be the same as long as you use the same method for the shaptons, naniwas and the henckels.

Something I want to try is to buy at least one of the Henckels just to see its quality. It would come in time to bring to the WNY meet up so I could have others evaluate it. The 250/1k is cheaper ($60) but the 3k/8k would get more use (but its $90). And I only have $150 in the budget, which would only get me EITHER Shaptons or the Henckels. Unless I do Jende's installment plan. However, I definitely have RAD, and no form of HAD, so I have no desire to buy both. I figure resale on Shaptons will recoup my money, but the Henckels probably will not. Its like, curiosity and strange attraction (and preferred by Lynn), vs. proven high grade tech. Hmmmm. I'm in a bind.

I think the more I think about it, cus I DON'T have HAD (except maybe for finishers) I only need one set of hones, and at this price the Shaptons are great value and will last a while apparently. They're fast cutters which is important cus I don't see honing as spiritual, I see it as a labour, a labour of love, but labour none the less. In the future I will definately be trying the Henckels, but I think in my budget crunch, the Shaptons will be a great work horse backbone to my finishers and we will probably never see this deal again. The Henckels will be there for a while I guess.

I would hesitate on the Henckels since no one has posted hands on experience with them in honing straight razors. They might be great but I wouldn't want to invest the $ and find that they weren't ideal for SR honing. At least with the other hones you're considering there is a track record of satisfied forum members to go by.

I think you've made the right call. After a great deal of mulling, I came to the same conclusion today about getting the shaptons.

Yeah. I decided on this, basically as I only need something to get my razors sharp, I only have HAD at the finishing stage, and even then if you gave me a choice between another JNat or and Escher it would have to be a hell of a bargain to beat out a razor of similar price/quality. I just like the razors more, so that where I want my cash to go. I will be contacting Jende (you, if you're reading this lol... perspective perspective perspective) about his stuff soon.

I have a feeling around the end of August or September when I have a little cash I'll buy the 3k/8k Henckels to dick around with because a tiny part of me wants to have discovered something new and useful. The 250/1k at $60 isn't really worth it, especially if I'll have other stuff in that range.

The struggle between HAD and RAD is tough. I have it too and RAD is winning right about now.

No it is not tough. RAD wins every time with me. Unless the scrouge factor comes in. $20 for a $300 hones will beat $20 for a $40 razor. But otherwise always RAD wins. Always.
