Thanked: 0Naniwa Superstone 12k
OK so I have a set of Naniwa super stones up to 10k. I use the 10k as my finisher before I hit crox on balsa and then strop on plan leather. I now have the opportunity to purchase a 12k.
Does anyone have experience of edges of both 10k and 12k? Is there enough additional benifit to justify the cost or would you purchase the 12k and 10k again if you made the decision in hindsight?
Many Thanks
Rob

Glad that you posted this question. I'm thinking of making a move on them and was wondering if one was 'better' than the other for straight razors.

Thanked: 4942I would say that if the Naniwa Super 10K is working for you, you're there. The 12K may be a little better, but considering you are going to the paste, I'm not sure it would be worth having both.
Have fun,
Lynn

Thanked: 156Lynn has always been honest with me and incredibly helpful and candid. :
As to the original question, forgo the 12k and get the Shapton 16k. I've personally found a slight improvement off of the 16k. Which reminds me...I promised to do a writeup... I'll get on it after I post pics of the results of one of the experiments I've been conducting this summer.

I am planning on getting a set of them too. Your feeling that they are not as good as the Nortons brings to mind my feelings about the Shapton pro 5/8. I had the 15 and would finish with it after the Norton 4/8 if I didn't finish with the coticule or Escher blue/green.
I tried the Shapton pro 5/8 after I first got them and I didn't like them. I put them in the cabinit for awhile but finally forced myself to go back to them and use them on a number of razors. I found that once I got to know them they worked just fine. For me anyway some times it takes some time to get to know a hone.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

10 k and pastes will do the job but if you want to save time then add 12 k + pastes too. it will speed up your honing. hope this helps.

Thanked: 286I have to say one thing jimmy you carn't beat the feeling of the 8k side of a norton in my opinion. I have the set of naniwas and i find they have a greasy feeling to them thats the feed back i get they look nice and come on a realy nice stand my advice is don't waste your cash the norton s do the same job if not better if you did'nt have either then the choice would be yours give a couple of months and there will be a new wet stone on the market it just goes on and on i fell in the trap like a lot of people do thinking could this hone be better. if you want you can buy mine there brand new i just lapped them.
