Thanked: 286I just find that the blade sucks and sticks to the hone. Oviously i will get use to that. I spent 2 3 hours on them last night with 4 old razors and they are all sharp but the shave was'nt as smooth as finishing on my belgiums and coming of 8k n which is so silky when in use. And why people are going to 12k then 16k is a nother step maybe there will be a 50 k stone soon this what i saying it just goes on but i supose it makes it more interesting. Does the naniwa cut faster than the norton i'm not sure on that one?

Thanked: 156Good question. I'll have to try going straight to the 16k.
I just figured I had them both, might as well use them, and since 12k < 16k; 12k should go first. But I see your point. I've just been blindly following the natural progression without questioning the reason. We'll see tomorrow. I'll give it a shot then, I've got a handful of razors that are coming up.

Thanked: 286Right i've just delibratley dulled two very good razors dovo and ti. Started out on the 1k naniwa and these things do cut very quik i reset the dull razors with 20 laps and i did run the edges 6 times over glass that did impress me plus the the 1k does'nt obsorb water like the norton 1k big bonus to me i did do further 10 laps just to make sure but both razors now shave arm hair very easily so most of the work done. i did 20 laps on 3000 n then 20 laps on 5000 then 10 on the 8000 then 10 laps on the 12 k. I have lapped all my hones again prior to this with dmt8c and they seemed to glide alot better infact they felt nicer to use. At this point i'm starting to like them they defanatley leave a nice shiny bevel and polish realy quik and well. I stropped 20 linen 30 red litigo then cowhide 30 both razors pass hht on fairly fine leg hair and easily on my thicker chest hair. I will shave tomorrow see how they feel i have feeling they will shave good the hole process took 30 min i believe it could take 20min but time does'nt bother me i like to take time and not rush. I may go back and do a thew strokes coti with water or some ch.5 if i think it could add more glide or feel better on my face the options are there if you have the extra hones but i will never feel the need for any thing higher than 12k only paste or a natural hone like bbw/coti or thuringian ch12k there all good finishers.

Thanked: 4942I would disagree with this. I have no axe to grind either way. I find the two stones comparable from a results standpoint, but personally like the feeling of the 12K better. I see no need to go from the Naniwa Super 12K to the Shapton Glass 16K. I have honed about 1,500 razors on each and the edges have been pretty close. I find that after either of them, 10 strokes with .5 diamond spray on felt gets the razor there. I have shaved without the pastes direct from both stones after stropping and don't feel one is better than the other.

Thanked: 522Naniwa 12k vs 16k Shapton
I agree with Lynn. I have both the Naniwa 12K and the Shapton 16k. While the number 16 suggests a finer result, the 12k has as good or better feedback feel than the 16k. I am by no means an expert but I like both the Nani 12k and the Shapton 16k.
I have too many stones for the amount of common sense I possess. I set bevels with the DMT 8C and 8EE. Then to the Norton pyramids. On to the Yelow Coticule and then the 12k SuperStone and/or the 16k. Then to the .5 Diamond and CeOx. Lately I have been ignoring the Escher and the Chinese 12k. Also the Chosera 10k and the Blue Belgian.
The DMT's and the Nortons and The Superstone work well for me at the moment. However I am glad I have alternatives when my mood changes.
Speaking of moods, I have a piece of denim blue jeans stapled to a 1/2 inch thick Balsa Wood to which I sprayed .25 diamond spray and added CeOx dust. My Genco Gold Seal shaved well after this treatment. I have signicantly lightened my touch on the hones and strops recently and am achieving far better shaves than I used to thanks to some recent posts which were very informative. Thank you honemeisters.
You old, experinced honemeisters are constantly seeking a higher level of perfection and this is keeping the rest of us motivated to move forward and improve our methods in hopes that we match yours. Mucho thanks to Lynn and all the mentors who are showing us the way. Without this forum, I would still have my finger up my -( how do you spell kazoo? )
My next goal is to shoot Utopian out of the saddle by learning how to hone my smiling blades. Just kidding, Ron..... JerryLast edited by mrsell63; 07-24-2009 at 08:07 AM.

He doesn't have a 16, but the 30's there. Not very cheap, but I've bought from him and it's a good shop with fast and proper shipping. Shipping in Europe's cheap and fast, even the slowest/cheapest option.
