Making Carborundum Lapping plates>CHEAP
For those of you that have a DMTXXC and some fine or medium fine carborundum stones, has anyone made a lapping plate for their pollishing stones? I lapped an old craftsman oilstone(unused) and hit some of my fine polishing hone with them, a very nice smooth lap. With the money we spend on fine stones, I look for ways to make them last longer. I know and have done waterstone to waterstone but this make a lot more sense to me since the carborundum is not going to wear as fast as the waterstone. Grooves could be cut in them of course but the crafstman 6X2 did not stick.

Mike, do you have to worry about grit contamination ?
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Yup, I use an old carb stone about 500 to 600 grit to finish lap most of my higher grit stones including barber hones (puts a nice finish on those). No issue with contamination because the carb is much harder than the other stone.
In any event, if the crab does release grits, they are ground into smaller bits anyway... not a problem.

Thanked: 522Carb
Forty years ago I got a 3 LineSwaty and was told to lap it with its companion stone which is a Carborundum 118S. It does a nice job on my Swaty........ Jerry

Why thank you guys. I used it again tonight to lap my higher grit shaptons and I think it leaves a nice very flat surface on them. Honed a few razors on them and they felt smoother than what I was doing before. What I like is it is very gentle which is what I think personaly a hard stone like glass shaptons need.
