Thanked: 30Sale on Norton kit, I can't afford it now, but maybe someone else can
While "window shopping" for stones, I came upon this sale, and thought I would pass it on. I hope the sale is still going on in a month or so, because I just don't have the money for this now, and I think I need a strop first? Sudden unemployment makes it rather difficult to get started.
anyway, here's the link to the sale on the norton waterstone kit I found with free shipping:
Water Stone Kit
I'm wondering if the antique blade I got is only in need of a good stropping since it does cut the hair off my thigh. ( I got so stoked about finally having a straight razor in my hand that I just HAD TO try cutting with it, and what do you know, I now have a huge bald spot on my thigh; no nicks though)
I'm really enjoying this site, even if I do have a razor I can't shave with right now, because I don't have the tools to make it shave ready, and I don't know anyone in Toronto that hones or even where I can find a strop in Toronto. I almost got a cheapy off ebay, but after reading what members had to say about ebay strops, I decided to save the 30 bucks and wait until I can afford one from perhaps a trusted member here.

Here's another option. For about a buck more you can get the same thing here, plus a holder.

Thanked: 30Thanks for the info keen.
I'm pretty sure this kit comes with the holder as well; one for each stone.
And the kit also includes a flattening stone. Plus, for those who want to know how to sharpen things other than a razor, they throw in an instructional DVD as well. And the free shipping is nice too. (although because I'm in Canada, it doesn't apply, but if I can come up with the money I will have it delivered to a friend who comes to Toronto every other weekend and lives in Buffalo)

So, how does the Norton flattening stone stone compare to things like the DMT D8C for lapping?
I was recently doing research and was pretty close to settled on getting the D8C and a Norton 4000/8000. This combo would add the 220/1000 into my planned setup at a decent savings.
Dollar-wise: D8C + 4000/8000 + Holder ~= Norton Flattening Stone + 220/1000 + 4000/8000 + Holder
But is the D8C worth paying more for than getting the Norton flattener?

Not to beat a dead horse in the head, but just to be clear for those thinking of purchasing. In the price I quoted, the flattening stone is included. Both hones come with the plastic case/holder that comes with the hones from SharpeningSupplies, plus Craftsman Studio includes this holder: http://www.discountcutlery.net/media/d1091.jpg
CraftsmanStudio does not include the instructional DVD.
So what it boils down to, is for about the same price, do you want the instructional DVD or the sharpening stone holder? Both companies have free shipping. Both are great deals IMHO.

Thanked: 326Welcome aboard!
OP here's another
Norton Waterstone Starter Kit: 220/1000 grit stone, 4000/8000 grit stone, SiC flattening stone
I got mine from them as well.
In past several months it sold it was generally within $115 range. Hope that helps.
Ninja edit - the instructional DVD is of a gentleman honing his chisel. So if you have JDM razor that's the only time it would be beneficial to you. Other than that, there's nothing in that DVD that I already knew from reading here.

Thanked: 30thanks SIRed8,
I was hoping I could find a shipper with a similar price point from within Canada, because once shipping to Canada is added (usually at least another 22 US dollars or more), it makes it almost the same as walking into the Lee Valley tools here downtown.
I'm probably either going to do that, or arrange with a friend who lives in Western NY and comes to Toronto frequently to take delivery from one of these places and bring it across the border next time she comes to town.
Does anyone know how heavy one of these kits would be?
I didn't notice the weight listed anywhere. Or it's right in front of me, but I can't see it anywhere.
Cheers and thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
