Thanked: 46best bang for the buck
ok guys i have started looking into hones and i have a question for you guys. im looking for some of the lower grit stones to start off with as i got a few razors that are in pretty bad shape. so i pose this question for you all. im looking for a 220 and a 1000 grit hone. now i was doing research and came up with something interestering. i noticed that the nortons are 1 inch thick and the nahiwa is 3/8th inch. now with heavy honing that is done with these hones i was wondering which one would last longer. i figure i would have to lap these alot do to the extended use to set bevels off restored beardknives. please for all that have used these tell me what you think. thank guys

I think if you bought the 220/1000 Norton combo you would hone a heck of a lot of razors before you had to buy another.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I've used a Norton 220 and a Norton 1k, but I used the single grit versions, not the combo. They are both great cutters; can't go wrong there, imo.

I've used Norton 1k and Nani 1k both are great, my only concern if you are looking for durable the Nani might be a little soft (I was honing out a chip and the rough edge actually scratched the hone- not a lot, but I'd imagine if you were to reset hundreds of ragged bevels it may run its course) but I don't know much, having only honed a handful. They both cut well though.

after you've honed enough razors to wear off any of these hones you'll realize the price difference was completely irrelevant.

I agree with Gugi here. Don't do what I did and pick the cheapest one. Don't get me wrong, my hone is just fine, but if I could go back and do it again, I'd have gotten the Norton instead of my King (at the time I'd not heard of the Nani's). Considering how long mine has lasted, I'd gladly have paid double what I did for a better hone (I do a lot of Sheffield wedges...).

+1 gugi is all I have to say. If the Nani's don't wear out, get one. I love mine. Also, would you consider a DMT C?
