The results are all similar with the differences being the degree of glide along with the cutting. The 30K however, will definitely notch the edge up a little if you don't over do it.

    Huge +1

Also in response to the Hype vs Proved...

Certain stones have proved to be solid performers there is no HYPE they just are...

    Norton 1-4-8
    Naniwa Super Stone Set
    Shapton Glass Stone set...

These just work... just so long as you do your part,,, they work, they work with every (solid) razor, every time, there is no question that if they don't work it is YOU not the stone!!!!....

Also on the 30k I have been messing with it quite a bit and have found that a 3-2-1 ending is the most successful one I have come up with to date... 3 light X stokes / 2 light back-honing strokes (watch the angle) / 1 light X stroke (thanks to Don for suggesting the back honing on it)

I bought the same set of clubs that Tiger Woods uses and dammit I haven't gotten a hole in one yet. I know it is the clubs ..... I couldn't be me ...... could it ?
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

yeah, but this just isn't helpful for those of us that are not adept at honing. can you recommend a hone that makes up for a lack of honing skill?

Get the Hone-X 5000. Don't tell anyone you heard it from me, but you don't even need a honing technique and that thing hones your razors to Feather sharp for you. You just set the razor near the hone. 300+ shaves between touch ups!

Even though the Naniwa stones attempt to re-create the "feel" of Japanese natural stones (hey, it says "Fine sharpening-taste as natural stone gives" right there on the label! ), the feel of the Shapton 16K actually reminds me a bit more of a Japanese natural than the Naniwa 12K. Both are great and effective hones, but the Shapton has an edge in "feel," for me anyway. The first time I used a good Japanese Asagi, I thought "Hmmm....that kinda feels like my 16K Shapton."

Now if the Shaptons came color-coded, with cool integral plastic honing stands with little rubber feet, then we'd be in business. I just love that.
