I think the secret is getting many tattoos.. but it must be from a tattooer who hones many razors and owns dozens of hones ....
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Hey! Just send half the money you are about to spend to any one of the honesters here and they will keep your personal razors sharp for life. And, on an as requested basis. Great deal for you.

What will they do with the money? Buy more stones - of course!

    LOL

I disagree. The secret is to "know thy hones". And to know thy hones most effectively one must secure the services of a statistical consultant on an ongoing and indefinite basis to design, collect and analyse your honing data. The friendly and handsome staff at S.C.A.M. (Statistical Consultants and Analytical Measurement) will be more than happy to help you out. Tell them Jimbo sent you, and you will receive a free "I Can't Believe it's Not a Chamois!" valued at over $2!!

JimR went to the hone shop, and the hone shop guy said "such and such...."

JimR went to the strop shop, and now he's got a Kanoyama 90000!

Jim, I think you best stay out of those shops if youy are a married man.

And would like to stay that way!

There is an old saying "Beware of the man with only one gun!" For good reason; he is probably very good with it. One year after acquiring an 8X3 coticule, I am still learning new ways to hone with it, and getting better and better shaves. How long would it take to learn every nuance of each of hundreds of different hones? Probably more years than I have left! Just my .02.

I dont know much about honing at all, however an experienced hone meister in the UK told me that unless I was restoring old blades (which I have now started to do neway) I would only ever REQUIRE a BBW to TOUCH UP THE EDGE, along side red and green strop paste.

This has worked well for me for about a year, just over in fact.

I feel as though I understand being able to touch an edge up and can do so for both wedges and hollow grinds using different techniques; but I dont by any means understand honing fully, as I have yet to restore an edge from 1000K up.

Honing is like sculpting. You simply remove whatever steel is necessary to reveal the sharp edge that is already within the steel.

I find myself in a similar position. Always looking for new ways to work the steel I have, and new steels to try... which leads to more stones ect...

However I have locked off one side of steel that helps me on my quest. I hate stainless steel so I don't deal with it. All my efforts are going into carbon steel knives and razors.

Some of the big name stones just don't like carbon steel as well as stainless and also the reverse. So finding the right combo can lead to Lots of stones and Lots of steel but I'm ok with that
