Olivia, congratulations on finding that beautiful Escher hone! With the unusual length, it should reduce your number of honing strokes, once you get it lapped. I have two Eschers, normal size, and could not be happier with the honing and shaving results obtained. At a guess, based on the appearance of your label, it would not surprise me if your stone was cut before 1900. Maybe even long before! These stones must have been mined for centuries. What a pity that, like the Belgian coticules, these wonderful hones are soon going to pass into history.

Olivia, it looks as though J.G. Escher was founded in 1790 at Sonneberg. I don't speak German, but look at this...your hone looks VERY old to me.
JGES Fabrikmarke des Thüringer Schleifmittel- und Spielzeugherstellers J. G. Escher & Sohn. Die Firma wurde bereits 1790 in Sonneberg gegründet und 1920 in JGES Theuern umbenannt. Die Produktion von Kunststoffautos begann offenbar im Jahr 1948. Das Unternehmen wurde 1953 enteignet und in VEB Press- und Schleifmittel umbenannt – später hieß die Fabrik Plasta Werke Sonneberg, Betrieb Theuern. Die ersten JGES-Modelle waren aus Bakelit, später wurden sie im Spritzgussverfahren hergestellt. Das letzte Produkt der Firma war ein einfaches Modell des Wartburg 353

nice find!! looks like christmas came early , nothing like honing old razors on old orig. stones,a perfect match, enjoy!!
