Thanked: 132Good thought provoking questions Dylan, as usual. Thanks.
Hmm...wish i could take better pictures...it would surely clear things up. This hone, looks very much original to the box, imo...the possibility, that it didnt belong, honestly didnt even cross my mind, until it was mentioned. The stone is only about 1/4 thick and glued directly to the base, which is a paddle. The hinged lid, with only enough clearance, to close snuggly over the hone is attached to the paddle with original brass screws and hinge. There is no play what so ever, with regards to the stone and the paddled box.
Now possibly, the label was added, in the lid at some later date, but who knows. He,he...
Also, the advertisement, from which this hone was purchased placed the hone as early 19th century...for what that is worth.
Many thanks as always,

Gotta love a good mind bender! I'll be looking out for the hone tests - don't let this baby sit unused, or the HAD police will come for you!

Hey Mac, ChrisL seems to have found the explanation for your mystery hone here.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
