Thread: Labeled coticule-paddle strop...anyone seen before?

Well, this is a new addition, to my meager collection. I bought this out of the U.K. and was wondering if anyone recognizes the label, etc...
Ive never seen a coticule referred to as a, "German Hone," before...also, the distributors name is, "E. Meinig, Hone Merchant, London."
The instructions, for use is also interesting, imo.

I recognize that label because it's mine!

I was traveling through the UK a few months ago and left it at a coffee shop by accident. When I came back it was gone

I've never seen one like it, but I can assure you that I'd snatch it up if I ever saw it in an antique store. Congratulations on the score!

Great piece Mac. Talk about a vintage coticule, that is certainly an old one. My first thought was that the distributor might have thought that "German Hone" was a selling point. Then my skeptical mind kicked in and I began to wonder if the case originally held a Thuringan and a coticule was eventually put in its place? Probably original to the case though, especially with Neil having a very similar set. One way or the other a great find for a hone collector.

Genuine German Hone for Razors, Lancets, Penknives &r

A regular and smooth edge, which does not tear the beard but cuts it smoothly can only be produced on a hone. A well finished hone edge in a good blade will owing to its perfectness last for months without renewal.

Directions Keep the Razor flat on the hone and draw it with moderate pressure, the action against the edge along the hone on a sloping direction as shown in the drawing, sharpening alternately and uniformly both sides of the blade. After setting, strap on a piece of leather, but not on an Emery Strap as the same would spoil the fine edge. Lancets & Penknives are set in the same manner, but the back must be a little elevated.

To prevent disappointment the Importers signature is labelled on all hones which he can warrant to be of the very best quality. Inferiour qualities are not marked in the same manner.

I'm not sure what the chances of this are, but could it be a case of the famous

In other words, I ask, is it possible that a coticule was transplanted into this box simply because it happened to fit in there well? I will be the first to say I have no idea how likely this is, and the chances of it being a mismatched box and hone may be 0%. Just asking, could it be...
