Great pictures! Just out of curiosity, did you go from 1 layer of tape to 2 fresh layers, or did you simply add another layer at that point?

1 layer of tape to set bevel and smooth it down a bit. Then 2 fresh layers of tape to finish it off. When using 30 and 15 micron grit it goes through the tape pretty quickly, so I put 2 fresh layers to finish polishing the edge up.

The tape is put on the spine to protect it from the honing, especially on the rougher grits. The second is put on so you only are just touching the cutting edge and up the bevel about half way.

    Okay, thanks for the explanation.

(BTW, pics labeled 3 and 1 micron are the same image, and so are the pics labeled 15 and 9.)

Oops. Yes they are. Don't understand that. Well, not much of a difference between 5 and 3 micron. Deleted 3 micron pic.

    Good eye.

Oh, I got a Veho Discovery.

Yeah, changes the angle less than a degree. I use tape just to protect the spine. Had to hone out a chip in blade so spent a while getting that out. All of my razors so far have been old used ones but with a little TLC they shave just fine.

he says the pictures were taken at 400x
but this rather looks like 40x ... you can see the whole bevel
and if the bevel is not smaller than 1/100 of an inch you would not see the whole bevel on 400x magnification, I guess
